Vance Allen Jones, 53, of Dillon, Montana, passed away in Bozeman, Montana, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sheridan, Montana, to George Jones and Gloria Douthard, and lovingly raised by his stepmother Faye Jones, Allen was a true Montana original. The mountains, rivers, and open country of Montana weren't just where he lived-they were part of who he was. He found happiness in the simple things: fishing a quiet stream, hunting in the hills, searching for sheds and horns, rock hunting, and spending time outdoors with the people he loved.
If you knew Allen, you knew he rarely missed an opportunity to make someone laugh. He was a goofball at heart, always joking around, pulling a prank, or finding a way to lighten the mood. His laughter was contagious, and his presence could brighten any room.
Allen was especially known for his storytelling. Whether he was recounting an adventure from the mountains or spinning a tale that grew a little taller with each telling, he had a gift for keeping people entertained. One of his favorite sayings was, "You can make anyone believe you if you tell the story good enough." Those who knew him best often found themselves wondering where the truth ended and the story began-and that's exactly how Allen liked it. His stories, humor, and larger-than-life personality created countless memories that his family and friends will treasure forever.
Above all, Allen loved his family. He is survived by his daughters, Mayson Jones, Jayden Jones, and his son Taylor Ingram who were a source of pride and love throughout his life. He is also survived by his beloved partner, Shawna Miller, whose love for Allen knew no bounds. Through good times and difficult days, especially during his battle with cancer, Shawna remained faithfully by his side. Their love was built on friendship, loyalty, laughter, and a deep devotion to one another.
Though his time here feels far too short, Allen leaves behind a legacy of laughter, adventure, and unforgettable stories. He taught those around him to appreciate the outdoors, enjoy life's simple pleasures, and never underestimate the power of a good story.
As family and friends gather to remember him, they will no doubt share stories of their own-some true, some perhaps stretched a little farther than they remember-just the way Allen would have wanted.
One of Allen's favorite quotes, from A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean, was:
"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it."
For those who knew and loved him, that river will always carry memories of his laughter, his stories, his love for Montana's outdoors, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
A celebration of Allen's life will be held at a later date.
May we remember Allen in the quiet Montana mountains, along the riverbanks he loved, in the laughter shared among friends, and in every story worth telling.
Forever loved, forever remembered, and deeply missed.
