Shirley Carpenter

October 23, 1936 — January 28, 2023

Shirley Jaydine Carpenter, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on January 28th, 2023, at the age of 86 in Dillon, Montana. Shirley was born on October 23rd, 1936, in Ronan, Montana to Jesse and Kathryn Fifield. She grew up in a boisterous family of 9 children and had loving relationships with all her siblings.

Though Shirley did not attend formal schooling she considered herself a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks. She met the love of her life, Dick, in Missoula, and their life's journey took them from Missoula to Hamilton, Wolf Creek, Alaska, and Darby before settling in Dillon where they raised their three boys and spent most of the last years of life surrounded by loved ones.

She was a charter member of the Dillon Sewing Club where she enjoyed lifelong friendships. Her love for sewing allowed her to clothe family and friends in unique creations. She also enjoyed listening to KDBM AM and calling in to win donuts. Shirley was a passionate fan of the Dillon Beavers sports program, attending games and matches if her health allowed, and listening to the radio if it did not. Wrestling and football were special favorites of hers.

In addition to her family responsibilities, Shirley also contributed to the community by volunteering as a Beaverhead County election poll worker for many years. She had a delightful sense of humor with an infectious laugh that made those around her smile even in times of adversity. Shirley was also an excellent cook who loved to feed her family and friends delicious meals they would always remember.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jesse and Kathryn, siblings Clyde, Don, Charlotte, Joan, and Chuck; her husband Roy (Dick) Richard Carpenter; infant daughter Denise; son Dean; grandson Trent; and daughters-in-law Geri and Donna.

Shirley is survived by her sister Mary Kenny; brothers Mike (Pam) Fifield and George (Dolly) Fifield; sons Chuck (Kathy) Carpenter and Rick (Julie) Carpenter; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her family is so grateful to the many friends and neighbors who provided rides and support in her times of need. We offer gratitude to the Barrett Hospital doctors, nurses and staff who treated Shirley with kindness and respect and eased her suffering in her last days.

Though there will not be a memorial service due to Shirley’s desires, she will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. Shirley will remain forever alive in our hearts until we meet again one day soon.
