M Herman

June 24, 1924 — December 28, 2018

June Willey Herman June Herman passed in her home on the afternoon of December 28, 2018 in the company of her three sons and her caregivers. She was born Marjorie June Willey on June 24, 1924 to Asa Charles and Elizabeth (Goldie) Leonard Willey on their Johnson Creek ranch in the Big Hole, but was only known by the names June, Junie or June Bug. She was the fourth of five children. She began the 1st grade three miles away at Gibbons School, where she enjoyed the company of one other student, Annabelle Marsing. She always rode her horse, Bonnie, to school, and the two were inseparable. June’s father insisted that she only ride bareback to avoid hanging up. June became an excellent rider and was said to ride like the wind without any daylight between her and Bonnie’s back. By7th grade June was the only student for miles, so her father donated a 10 x 12-foot building behind the house and her mother made room in the house for June’s teacher Buella Dubler. During her high school years, June boarded with the Jackson’s on Railroad Avenue in Dillon. She and Irma Jackson were lifelong friends. After high school, June attended the Butte Business School then landed a job at First National Bank and after a time, moved to the State Bank. During WWII June moved to Portland to work at a barrel factory. She married Arlo Herman on Aug 3, 1946, in Butte, MT, and started their family in a little house on Idaho Street in Dillon. Together, June and Arlo opened and operated a burger joint called “The Snack Shack” on the last block the of Montana Street. In 1963, she and Arlo purchased the home they would live in the rest of their lives and June returned to work at the State Bank and Trust Company. Here, June and Arlo enjoyed entertaining their many friends and family. In 1975, she and Arlo purchased a cabin in the Grasshopper Valley where they continued nurturing friendships old and new and spoiling their family. June loved creating things for the Grasshopper Ladies Club to generate money for scholarships. June worked at State Bank and Trust Company until her retirement in 1986. June and Arlo retired on the same day so that they could focus together on travel, friends, cards, and always family. June was where the heart was and made new friends until the end of her life. June was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Harold, and her sisters, Corrine and Elaine.
