Hiram Lapham

Hiram Clay Lapham,100 years old, known to most as “Bud,” passed away peacefully Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 in Dillon, Montana, surrounded by family. Bud was born in Jackson, Montana on December 31st, 1914 to parents Claud and Myrtle Lapham. He grew up on the family cattle ranch and attended Beaverhead County High School. Bud played football for the University of Montana Griz before receiving his degree in History at Western Montana College. On June 17th, 1937 he married Frances Lyon. Together they raised 3 children and shared 62 years of marriage before her death in 1999. In 1943, after working for the ATF in Washington D.C., Chicago, and Peoria, Illinois, Bud’s love of ranching brought him and Frances home to Jackson to take over the family ranch. Bud particularly enjoyed haying and was part of the crew until his late 80's. He also had a passion for boxing and fought in several pro fights. Bud dedicated himself to fitness and stayed active walking and exercising. His other joys included hunting, riding horses and reading. But above it all, he loved to ranch. He spent his life doing what he loved, building his family’s ranch, and operating it well into his 90’s. Bud is preceded in death by his parents, wife, baby brother and sister Bonnie. He is survived by his three children; Sandra Lapham, Amber Szafryk of Plains, MT and Max and Debbie Lapham, as well as 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Bud’s family wants to give special thanks to Kindred Parkview staff, Dr. Ron Loge, Dr. Sandra McIntyre, and Marie Holt and staff at Barrett Hospital and Healthcare for their dedicated service and excellent care. At his request, no service will be held. Donations in memory can be made to the Jackson Fire Department and the Wisdom and Grasshopper Ambulance. Bud will be forever remembered and missed.
